Hilton Boston/Woburn Announces Completion of $16 Million Renovation and Opening of Matadora

WOBURN, MASS.; October 30, 2017 – Hilton Boston/Woburn has completed a comprehensive $16 million renovation, which drew inspiration from the area’s historic shoe and leather-making industries, and today will open the doors to Matadora, its highly-anticipated Spanish tapas restaurant. The hotel has been timelessly tailored for the modern traveler while articulating Woburn’s legacy of craftsmanship throughout the transformed lobby, guest rooms and function spaces.

“After 10 months of construction, the Hilton Boston/Woburn has been completely transformed with a layered redesign that pays homage to Woburn’s rich industrial history while conveying a modern sensibility,” said General Manager Brett Woods. “Our associates are excited to welcome guests and the community to experience the brand new rooms, public spaces and the incredible menu at Matadora.”

Matadora is a modern tapas restaurant concepted by COJE Management, the team behind Boston’s social dining spots Yvonne’s, RUKA and Lolita. The dining destination features design inspired by Spanish artistry and local craftsmanship. The menu is focused on tailored tapas, flavorful cuts & creative entrees developed by Culinary Director Tom Berry and executed by Chef de Cuisine William Jimenez. Among the menu highlights are a curated selection of Spanish meats and cheese; tapas stand outs like Flaming Chorizo, Charred Galician Octopus, Chickpea Fried Calamari and Basque Street Corn; entrees from the custom, wood-fired grill, including Black River Farms Grass Fed NY Strip, Rare Yellowfin Tuna and Long Bone Pork Chop; and classic Spanish dessert like Hot Churros and Cantabrian Ricotta Cake.

Matadora’s stylish patio flows seamlessly inside to a central bar and the restaurant’s centerpiece, a custom, wood-fired grill anchoring the open kitchen, which serves breakfast and dinner daily. From above, hotel guests with interior balconies look down onto the kitchen’s rooftop mural depicting the restaurant’s namesake fighting a charging bull.

“Developing the Matadora concept and ethos has been a thoughtful and artistic process,” explained Berry. “The menu draws inspiration directly from my travels through Spain and each touchpoint of the guest experience supports that theme – from menu design to decor and service style within the space.”

The $16 million renovation revitalized the Woburn hotel’s lobby, guest rooms and event & meeting spaces, each paying homage to the town’s legacy of craftmanship, which dates back to the 17th Century. Cobblers and cordwainers dominated the city’s industry through the mid-1800s when manufacturing shifted to leathermaking by 1865. In 1885, Woburn became New England’s leading leather producer and its talented tanners are credited with innovations still used today. In fact, it was Woburn’s Henry Thayer who developed chrome tanning in 1901, a process that makes leather water-resistant, more durable, softer and suppler than traditional vegetable tanning.

“We knew this development had immense potential to benefit from our repositioning strategy as one of the city’s few full-service hotels. Matadora adds a spectacular, destination dining experience that aligns with our vision for this property,” said The Davis Companies Founder and CEO Jonathan G. Davis. “We look forward to witnessing the vitality this hotel brings to Woburn and its visitors.”

Guests enter the Hilton Boston/Woburn through the vibrant lobby, which welcomes visitors with a bold lighting installation, timeless details, warm woods, layered area rugs and vintage elements like check-in desks constructed from railroad ties and accent walls inspired by a Brannock shoe-size measuring device. The lobby flows into the six-story open atrium and past the Rivet Room, where travelers can relax in oversized leather armchairs, play billiards or enjoy a glass of wine while overlooking the refurbished indoor swimming pool.

The 344 newly renovated guest rooms, including two Junior Suites, showcase the city’s industrial character by highlighting elements of fine cobbler shops and tanneries while infusing contemporary touches. Forged metals, lacquered hard goods, embossed leather headboards and 3D wire art all come together to create guest rooms that are bespoke, spacious and inviting. Room features include Serenity Beds with Serta Perfect Sleeper Suite Dreams mattresses, Peter Thomas Roth bath products and interior balconies overlooking the indoor pool.

Hilton Boston/Woburn’s 18,000 square feet of newly renovated event space offers flexible options for all styles of corporate meetings, social events and weddings with full-service catering influenced by the culinary team at Matadora. The elegantly appointed Grand Ballroom and 13 meeting & function rooms, named after historic Woburn figures, are fitted with technologies for today’s planner yet punctuated with vintage design elements reminiscent of yesteryear. Spaces are accented with pressed-tin ceilings, high-backed winged chairs, industrial-style chandeliers and finely-crafted leather booths.
