Why I Love My Job is a series of interviews with HBS students and alumni on what drives their satisfaction at work.

Current Position: Vice President – Investments, The Davis Companies

Current Location: Boston, MA

Describe your role at The Davis Companies.
My primary role is the sourcing, underwriting, and closing of new equity and high-yield debt investments on behalf of our latest real estate private equity fund. My area of focus is residential investment strategies, including both for-sale and for-rent opportunities located primarily on the east coast.

What’s your favorite part of working at The Davis Companies?
The variety. Every market and property is different and comes with its own problems to solve. I enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out the right business plan for a new investment and the best path to execute that plan. We work on a lot of complicated investments that are hard to buy and hard to figure out, but I have fun trying to find a way to make them work every day.

What attracted you to this opportunity?
I came to The Davis Companies because of the flat structure and entrepreneurial environment. Jon Davis, who founded the company and still runs it today, is a true real estate entrepreneur and still operates the company that way even as it has grown and attracted more institutional capital. There are no ideas that aren’t worth exploring, and I enjoy the latitude to try to find interesting new opportunities to keep growing our business.

What are you most proud of when it comes to your work at The Davis Companies?
I’m proud of the relationships I’ve built with many of my colleagues. I work with a great team of interesting people across our entire platform, and our best investments are always those that bring together all facets of our company. I learn from my colleagues every day, and I hope that I’ve been able to give back to them something valuable from my experience as well.
